How to Replace Hydraulic Filters: Pressure Differential & ISO Cleanliness Guide

Many mechanical maintenance teams replace hydraulic filters only according to fixed time cycles or visual dirtiness. This method is inaccurate and unreliable, leading to unnecessary cost waste or overdue filter use. The two professional and global recognized judging standards are pressure differential value and ISO oil cleanliness class.

1. Pressure Differential Value (The Most Reliable Replacement Standard)

Every hydraulic filter is designed with a differential pressure warning threshold. When the filter captures metal debris, rubber particles and contamination, the pressure drop gradually increases.
Replacement Rules:

Once differential pressure reaches the alarm value (0.5–1.0 bar), replace the filter immediately.

If the equipment shows slow movement, high oil temperature or weak load performance without alarm, the filter is already overloaded.

Overdue filters will open the bypass valve, causing unfiltered oil to circulate directly and severely damage hydraulic components.

2. ISO 4406 Oil Cleanliness Standard Interpretation

ISO 4406 is the international standard for hydraulic fluid cleanliness, expressed by two numbers such as 18/15, 16/13 and 14/11. The smaller the numbers, the cleaner the oil.
Standard Reference:

18/15 / 19/16: Dirty oil, filter failure risk, immediate replacement required

16/13: Normal condition for general construction machinery

14/11 / 13/10: Precision hydraulic system standard for servo machines and industrial stations
If the actual oil cleanliness class exceeds the equipment requirement, the filter is insufficient or clogged, and must be replaced in time to avoid component wear.

3. Simple On-site Judgment Without Test Equipment

Users can judge filter failure through equipment performance:

Slow mechanical action and unsmooth operation

Abnormally high hydraulic oil temperature

Increased system noise and vibration

Frequent valve sticking and pressure releasing failure

4. Why Time-based Replacement Is Not Accurate

Dust content, working load and oil quality vary greatly in different environments. Mining and heavy-duty conditions clog filters quickly, while clean indoor environments allow longer service cycles. Professional filter replacement must rely on pressure differential and ISO cleanliness data.

5. TYYFILTER Professional Solution

TYYFILTER hydraulic filters are manufactured with accurate pressure resistance, high dirt-holding capacity and reliable material compatibility. They effectively stabilize ISO oil cleanliness, reduce component wear and extend equipment service life. All products can provide official test reports, material certificates and customized solutions for global industrial and engineering machinery clients.
